Water Quality Sustainability in the Animas River
Presented by Dr. Peter Butler, Chairman, Bonita Peak Mining District Community Advisory Group
Peter Butler, Ph.D., has been involved in numerous Colorado water issues for over thirty-five years. He worked with the Animas River Stakeholders Group (ARSG) for twenty-five years on abandoned mine remediation and improving water quality and served many years as the group’s coordinator. He is currently the chair of the Bonita Peak Community Advisory Group, advising EPA on issues regarding the Bonita Peak Mining District Superfund site. Peter has a bachelor’s degree in physics from Colorado College, a master’s degree in economics from the University of Colorado, and a Ph.D. in Natural Resource Policy from the University of Michigan. His Ph.D. is a combination of economics, water law, hydrology, and water quality management. He served on the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission for nine years, three years as chair. He has also served as chair of both the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission and the Southern Ute Indian Tribe/State of Colorado Environmental Commission, and as president of the Lake Durango Water Authority.
